Antiviral and antioxidant properties of active alginate edible films containing phenolic extracts

2018

In this work, novel active edible films having antiviral activity were developed through the solvent casting method. Emulsified edible films were prepared by adding lipids into alginate films in order to improve their water vapour permeability. In addition, two natural extracts rich in phenolic compounds, specifically a green tea extract (GTE) and a grape seed extract (GSE) were used as active agents. Interestingly, incorporating GTE or GSE within the biopolymer matrix, the films exhibited significant antiviral activity against murine norovirus (MNV) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) since ∼2 log reduction were recorded for the 0.75 g extract/g alginate in the film, being GTE more efficient than …

MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF ANCIENT GRAPE SEEDS FROM A SINK IN THE MIDDLE-AGE TOWN OF PALERMO

2014

The archaeological excavations in Piazza della Vittoria, in the Roman-Middle Age town of Palermo (Sicily) put in light a sink 3.20 m deep and 1 square m. large, partially filled by thin organic sediments. Grape seeds (grape-stones), fish scales and few vertebrate bones have been found in specific strata sealed under a stratum chronologically attributed to Islamic Middle-Age period (a post-quem limit). The finding of well preserved grape seeds is peculiar and their study opens the opportunity to improve the actual knowledge about evolution, cultivation, use and trade of Vitis L. in the Mediterranean area. This preliminary work focuses on morphologic and morphometric analysis of the ancient g…

Does unsaponifiable fraction of grape seed oil attenuate nitric oxide production, oxidant and cytotoxicity activities.

2019

Triterpenoids, tocopherols, and phytosterols presented in unsaponifiable fraction of grape seed oil have several beneficial effects comprising antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor capacities. In this study, the unsaponifiable fraction of three Tunisian grape seed varieties (Vitis vinifera L.), namely Merlot, Carignan, and Syrah, was investigated. The identified compounds were two triterpenic compounds (β-amyrin, lanosterol), six phytosterols (campesterol, ∆7 -avenasterol, stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, β-sitostanol, cholesterol), and three tocopherols (α, β, and γ tocopherols). The unsaponifiable fraction had significant protection against oxidative damage by modulating NO production …

Bioactive Phytochemicals from Grape Seed Oil-Processing By-Products

2022

Winemaking leads to by-products with high added value, which can be used for new productions in different fields. The reuse of grape seed is addressed in the production of oil and related oil-processing by-products. The main residue from seed oil processing is represented by grape seed flour. A focus on grapeseed oil and health by literature quantitative research analysis is presented. Chemical composition, bioactive compounds, and biological and functional properties ofgrape seed oil and oil-processing by-products are described, and databases containing data and information on grape seed by-products are highlighted. Due to their contents of nutrients and bioactive molecules, grape seed oil…

Grape seed and skin extract reduces pancreas lipotoxicity, oxidative stress and inflammation in high fat diet fed rats.

2016

IF 2.326; International audience; Obesity is related to an elevated risk of diabetes and the mechanisms whereby fat adversely affects the pancreas are poorly understood. We studied the effect of a high fat diet (HFD) on pancreas steatosis, oxidative stress and inflammation as well as the putative protection afforded by grape seed and skin extract (GSSE). HFD induced body weight gain, without affecting insulinemia, nor glycemia and dropped adiponectemia. HFD also provoked the ectopic deposition of cholesterol and triglyceride, and an oxidative stress characterized by increased lipoperoxidation and carbonylation, inhibition of antioxidant enzyme activities such as CAT, GPx and SOD, depletion …

Remineralization potential of grape seed extract hydrogels on bleached enamel compared to fluoride gel : an in vitro study

2019

Background Remineralizing of bleached enamel is a common procedure that aims to compensate enamel mineral lose. This study aimed to evaluate the remineralization effectiveness of experimentally prepared grape seed extract hydrogels (GSE) compared to fluoride gel on bleached enamel. Material and methods Thirty extracted maxillary incisor were bleached using white smile bleaching agent. Bleached specimens were divided into three groups (10/group) according to the remineralizing agents tested: [GSE 6%, GSE 10%, or fluoride gel]. After bleaching and remineralization procedure, the specimens were stored in artificial saliva at 37°C. Micro-hardness and Energy-Dispersive X-ray and ultra-morphologi…

FISH WASTE, NOT A PROBLEM BUT A POSSIBLE SOLUTION: CHITOSAN EXTRACTS AND NEW PACKAGING POSSIBILITIES.

2021

The fishing industry is one of the oldest industries in Europe and also one of the most important economic resources in the Mediterranean area. However, to date, in addition to creating considerable economic wealth, the various sectors (markets, restaurants, shops, etc.) also create significant levels of fish waste. If not processed or recycled adequately, these waste streams can lead to environmental degradation and severe pollution (Gao et al., 2018). Although today fish waste is considered a potential resource to generate high-added value, current practices in the fishing industry do not fully exploit its biological potential. Amongst the various possibilities for reuse, the production o…

Antioxidant Activity and Release Kinetics of Caffeic and p-Coumaric Acids from Hydrocolloid-Based Active Films for Healthy Packaged Food

2017

International audience; Sustainable hydrocolloid-based films containing natural antioxidants, caffeic and p-coumaric acids at different concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 5%, and 10% w/w of polymers, were designed for packing fatty foods. Antioxidant activities and kinetics for all film formulations were assessed using radical scavenging activity (DPPH), reducing power, and iron chelating ability. Release kinetics of the antioxidants from the films into a food simulant (96% ethanol) were analyzed. The intermolecular interactions between antioxidants and polymers chains were assessed by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) and related to the film properties. Antioxidan…

Fatty Acids and Triacylglycerols Profiles from Sicilian (Cold Pressed vs. Soxhlet) Grape Seed Oils

2021

Among the Sicilian economic productive sectors, that of wine production has today a considerable economic value. However, with the growth of this sector, notable was the increase in the production of waste, which to date is not only an economic damage for companies, but also a threat to the environment. It is known that waste from wine production has properties (e.g., antioxidants) which have potential reuse at cosmetic, pharmaceutical and nutritional levels to obtain economically sustainable applications. A new goal is given by the recovery of added value compounds from agri-food wastes and by-products. Grape seed oil is a promising vegetable fat and cold pressing does not involve the use …

Possibility of fuel cell powering with grape seed oil

2015

In the last few years alternative energy sources have been fast developing. One of technical device using these sources is fuel cell. Fuel cell performs direct conversion of chemical fuel into electrical energy, without combustion and characterized by high efficiency. Most commonly fuel cells are powered by hydrogen. However, problems with the storage of hydrogen are the reason for the search of new fuels for fuel cells. Due to development of the renewable energy sources, the powering of high efficiency power sources with bio-fuels is very important. Vegetable oil is an alternative fuel for Diesel engines and for heating oil burners. Powering high efficiency power sources (like fuel cells) …
